in recent weeks. the attacks are growing increasingly violent, as richard jordan reports. >> reporter: when a woman was attacked last night, police say the area was likely dark and des oh late. >> usually after 9:00 here, it's almost closed. >> reporter: alexandria police say the 20-year-old got off a bus at 11:30 on eisenhower and van doren. a short walk later up the street to courtney avenue, that's where the victim was caught offguard by a strange man. she says she believes he's hispanic. >> he demanded money. when she said she had no money, he pulled her into the bushes where he sexually assaulted. >> reporter: it has some women in the area on edge. >> i'm worried about it. i didn't expect from this area like this. >> reporter: that concern is growing, because alexandria police are now investigating three attacks on women just within the past month. this one, the most violent, but detectives say they don't think the three are connected, because the other two happened near homes run parkway, about two miles away, and they think that is just too far. the previous two victims managed to ge

will close after the morning rush hour tomorrow. richard jordan spoke with drivers who are eager for this project to be done. >> reporter: the road to a faster, smoother commute is paved with detours and closures. vdot 495 express lane projects started four years ago. >> it's bad around here with all the construction and everything going on. >> reporter: but road work is almost complete. and part of the finishing touches go right through merryfield. the left hov ramp taking drivers from i-66 east of 495 north will close friday after the morning rush hour. >> hov motorists will have this ramp shut off. they will have to take the general purpose ramp on the right to go onto 495 north. >> reporter: that means all drivers will use the same ramp. truth is, the 66 eastbound hov lanes have already been closing on a daily basis just after the morning rush hour. but now, in order to get all the work done on time, they have to be shut down 24/7 until the express lane project is complete. vdot crews will pave and paint the ramp while drivers yield, merge and hit the brakes. those who freque
this morning. i'm angie gaffe. welcome to news 4 today. >> i'm richard jordan. let's go to tom. >> sandy is a huge hurricane affecting the entire eastern seaboard. you can see right around here, the center of circulation, there's an increased growth now of convectional, increased growth of thunderstorms and you can see this now beginning to really dig deep and develop. out ahead of that, way out of ahead of that, a couple hundred miles, category 1 hurricane with 75 mile per hour wones. as it comes inland as a strong post-tropical area of low pressure coming ashore anywhere between chincoteague and long island, it's a huge area. it could be coming ashore here. it looks like the timing will be after sunset on monday, perhaps around 8:00 p.m. or so, coming ashore then, then moving north of the metro area, slowly into monday night and tuesday morning. we'll have the worst wind and heaviest rain. i'll sort it out for you coming up in just a few minutes. back to you. >> thank you, tom. we're tenning to track sandy as the storm moves towards the east coast. >> danielle lee is live in cape may,

jordan, news 4. >> thanks, richard. >> all lanes of i-95 are open. the accident happened around 11:30 last night at mile marker 138. virginia state police say the car was trying to avoid hitting a deer. the accident shut down northbound lanes of 95 for more than five hours. it took that long to clean up debris and fuel that spilled. >> look at all that traffic out there. is it still out there? let's talk to danella for the first time this wednesday morning. >> good morning to you both. i-95 in virginia is a lot better. it was tied up. now, nice and clear. here is the situation still going on that was occurring this morning. northbound pennsylvania avenue, the left lane blocked between the beltway because of a water main break in that area. crews are working to repair it. the outer loop of the beltway, an earlier crash at georgia avenue. that crash is gone. a bit under speed. not terrible. sluggish as you head toward i-270. it will take 14 minutes. >> back to you. >> thanks. >>> the federal government launched a prop into the d.c. tax office. chief financial office -- the securities
'm eun yang. >> and i'm richard jordan in for aaron gilchrist. it's tuesday, october 23rd, but the temperatures sure aren't feeling like it's late october around here. we have a warmup, and it looks like temperatures are only going up from here. >> looks good, tom. >> this is the time of year we get big contrasts between the morning and afternoon, so you have to dress for two seasons. >>> it's rather chilly now. storm team 4 current temperatures, all those areas in blue are in the 40s. that covers much of virginia, much of maryland and the eastern shore. the little patches of green, that's where we're in the low 50s. right at reagan national on the warmer waters of the potomac, it's at 54. right around the chesapeake bay, temperatures there generally low to mid-50s. farther west in the mountains in western maryland, much of eastern west virginia, mid-40s, as is much of the shenandoah valley, except around winchester and the low 50s. here's the view from space. a few clouds drifting over from a little disturbance. scattered clouds will stay to our north. just a few clouds f
jordan was out and about this afternoon in northwest d.c. he continues our team coverage now, where a tree fell on a house today. richard? >> reporter: yeah, jim and pat, i just spoke briefly with the couple that lives inside the house. they were home when this tree came down on top of their roof. they're assuming it was a strong burst of wind that came by. but you can see the large tree from their backyard just fell on top of their home. it also clipped some of the other trees nearby. so other branches came down as well, even the neighbor's home suffered some roof damage. all this happening here, nevada and nebraska, the couple that lives inside, fortunately they were not hurt. they were able to go back into their home, escorted by d.c. emergency management workers. they went inside to grab a couple of their belongings, then they were sent over to their neighbor's home. that's where they're going to stay at least for the time being. the fire crews are out here, as well as police, just trying to assess the damage to the homes and see if there was any structural damage. they have sin

about. that ramp will close after the morning rush tomorrow. richard jordan spoke to some drivers who are eager for this project to just get over. richard? >> reporter: the view behind the wheel has more brake lights than open road at the i-66 interchange. cones and barriers create commuter confusion. but all the work started four years ago now, and is in the final stretch. for many drivers the end can't come soon enough. >> hurry up. >> reporter: but before the construction is complete, the last projects are shifting into high gear. the left hov ramp taking drivers from i-66 east to 495 north will close friday after the morning rush hour. >> hov motorists will have this ramp shut off. they will have to take the general purpose ramp on the right to go onto 495 north. and also, those people heading to 495 south, they're going to -- they can still take the ramp at 495 south. >> reporter: that means drivers will use the same ramp. vdot will paint the ramp while drivers yield, merge and hit the brakes. those who frequently drive in the area say the a.m. is mayhem. >> around 7:00, 8:00. if
